By Lori Montgomery M.D., CCFP

Neuropathic pain is pain arising from an injury or dysfunction in the nervous system. This can be a result of a single event like a trauma or a surgery, or an ongoing process, like diabetes or certain kinds of infection. This kind of pain is often described as burning, stabbing, or electric-shock-like. Some people also describe numbness, hot or cold sensations, or a “pins and needles” feeling going along with the pain.
